Tiny
Bates Banquet featuring Coach
Jeff Tedford.
This high-profile event honors the coach, as well as
the winner of the Henry J. "Tiny" Bates
Memorial Award. The
recipient of this award is a graduating senior
player from the Sacramento Valley region.
The
Grid Club was founded in 1947 by Tiny
Bates, who played football for the Golden Bears
under legendary Coach Andy Smith in 1916 and
1917. Along with Lynn "Pappy" Waldorf, Tiny Bates
wanted a place where Cal alumni and friends from the
Sacramento area could gather to share the
camaraderie of the Blue and Gold. His goal was
achieved with the founding of the Cal Grid Club of
Sacramento. The memory and commitment of Tiny
Bates
lives on as we gather each week during football
season to support our Golden Bears.
